New Textbook Teaches Math Through Environmental Science

February 26, 2008 – Environmental science is often envisioned as a single science course or, rarely, a capstone course, but River Crossing Environmental Charter School is using environmental science as its driving mission. All subjects are standards-based, but are taught through the lens of environmental case studies. Incorporating environmental science throughout the math curriculum has been an interesting challenge for the charter school. Through a grant, the school is planning to disseminate the results of their efforts as a math textbook. Available in July 2008, the seventh and eighth grade curriculum has students applying math to lessons on such topics as gardening, ecological footprints, and the physics of birds in flight.
